Shauna:
Listen up, Guy Free Working on Me is not meant to be a permanent lifestyle. It is meant to be a time in your life where you stop basing your worth, your happiness, and your self esteem on having a man at your side. This is going to be an all out redesigning of who you are, who you want to be. What feelings are you ready? Let’s go.
Hello everyone. I’m Shauna Hoffman and welcome to the first episode of Guy Free Working on Me, a woman’s journey to self awareness. All right, let’s talk about how you first came to this podcast. It’s possible that maybe you just got dumped. Maybe divorce is on the horizon. Maybe you just got yourself out of an unhealthy codependent relationship. Perhaps you’ve just been widowed or maybe you’re in a relationship and somehow you have lost yourself. Could be, that you just realize that until you work on you, you’re never going to find your soulmate. So right here and right now I say to you, if you don’t find your own soul, how are you ever gonna find its mate?
So how the heck did I come to write my book in the first place, Guy Free Working on Me? Here’s how it happened. A few years ago, my niece showed up at my door. She was just ready to change her young 21 year old life. She just ended a very unhealthy relationship and yeah, energy sucking relationship. And she now had a new motto, boy free working on me. She was 21, she’s years ahead of the path that most of our sisterhood takes. But with great female pride, and definitely a little bit of Aunt ego, I applauded her whole heartedly. You go girl. And then I realized that just about every woman that I was seeing in my therapy practice at the time was going through the same thing. Dumper, dumpy, heartbroken, feeling free. Each one was in my office to find herself again.
So when I offered Guy Free Working on Me as their new motto, they just all reacted with this great, huge sense of, ‘Damn right girl, it is my turn!’
All right. Many of you who are here listening to this podcast have just been newly single-IZED as I call it, but there’s also another listener, one that I really welcome. This one is someone who’s still in a relationship but has never really taken the time to work on herself.
Guy Free Working on Me is a metaphor for understanding that you will never truly know yourself if your identity or believe in ultimate happiness is wrapped up in having a mate. So those of you who are in this part of the sisterhood, you’re going to have a little bit tougher time because you’re going to be metamorphosizing right in front of your man. That takes extra strength. A lot of men won’t understand it. They won’t understand your new search for self, there’ll be scared or they’ll be threatened or they might even try to keep you from changing. So for you ladies, it’s going to take a little bit extra conviction to stay on your new path.
The good news for some of you lucky women is that your mates will actually welcome this growth and they’re going to come along on the ride with you. All right ladies, there are many catalysts to this change in perception.
This switch from being out of focus to being in our focus, but they all really mean the same damn thing. If you don’t work on yourself, if you don’t know yourself, if you don’t honor your self, then the inevitable is going to happen. You’ll wind up ending a relationship, someone else’s going to end it, or you’re just going to live in misery till death do you part. So if you’ve not made up this leap of faith towards you, I hope that you’re going to take all that’s here, all on this podcast, all on the podcasts to come, and I hope you choose once again.
So let’s talk about it. What does it mean to work on yourself? Don’t we do that every day? I mean after all, we’re living breathing beings and constantly growing and changing, right? Okay. Yeah, it’s true, but how you change, why you change and what you change into, are often too tied up in what other people’s beliefs, ethics, values, morals, needs and desires are. In other words, what they want you to be. Instead of who you want to be.
On these podcasts, you’re going to learn to rethink who you are, who you want to be. You want to present yourself to the world based on you, your inner most core self. I know that sounds a little, you know, scary because after all, most of us have never really let that inner core show, we’ve masked it or more likely we don’t even know who we are. What we’re going to do on these podcasts is we’re going to explore your defense mechanisms, your patterns of relating to others, your ability to communicate. We’re going to find out what you really feel, how you became who you are. If you even like the person that you are, the goal, genuine self, individuated, self, self, actualizing authentic self. All of those wonderful words for knowing your self.
So I hope you come back for the next few episodes of Guy Free Working on Me, a woman’s journey to self-awareness, where we’re going to really start to do the work. I hope you all take good care of yourself, honor yourself, love yourself, and I hope you come back soon. Bye.
